Empowering AAC Users: A Call for Inclusive Professional Development
The advancement of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices has been transformative for individuals with communication disabilities. These devices provide a voice to those who would otherwise struggle to express themselves. However, despite their significance, the representation of AAC users in the development and delivery of professional development in this field has been lacking. Inspired by the need for change, LJ and Amy embarked on a journey to address this disparity, recognizing the importance of having AAC users actively involved in shaping the discourse and practices surrounding AAC.
Understanding the Gap:
LJ and Amy both share a deep connection with the AAC community. Amy is a speech therapist while LJ, an AAC user, involvement stems from personal and professional interests. Through our interactions, we recognized a glaring gap in the representation of AAC users in the design and delivery of professional development programs. Despite being the primary beneficiaries of AAC technology, their voices were conspicuously absent from these crucial conversations. This realization catalyzed our determination to effect change.
The Importance of Representation
Representation matters profoundly in all aspects of life, and the realm of AAC is no exception. AAC users bring unique perspectives, insights, and lived experiences that are invaluable in shaping the development of AAC technology and practices. By actively involving AAC users in professional development initiatives, we not only ensure that their needs and preferences are adequately addressed but also foster a sense of empowerment and ownership among them. Moreover, their inclusion serves as a powerful statement of recognition and respect for their agency and autonomy.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the clear benefits of involving AAC users in professional development, several challenges exist. Accessibility barriers, attitudinal biases, and systemic inequalities often hinder meaningful participation. However, these challenges also present opportunities for growth and innovation. By proactively addressing these obstacles, we can create more inclusive spaces where AAC users are not just passive recipients but active contributors to the discourse surrounding AAC.
Our Vision for Change
Our vision for change revolves around the principle of co-creation and co-learning. We envision professional development programs where AAC users are not merely subjects of study but integral partners in the process. This entails fostering collaborative relationships between AAC users, educators, researchers, and developers, where diverse perspectives are valued and respected. By centering the voices and experiences of AAC users, we aim to create more relevant, effective, and inclusive professional development initiatives that ultimately enhance the quality of life for individuals with communication disabilities.
